“Love yourself first and everything else falls into place.”

I’m gonna get right to it: it’s taken me a long time to get to a place in my life where I can truly say that I love myself. I have gone through horrible relationships — whether it’s been with boyfriends, family, or friends — all because I didn’t love have enough self-love to stand up for myself.

So, this Valentine’s Day, I am learning to love MYSELF first, which is actually a huge deal for me. I actually used to think that this was extremely selfish. It’s kind of a backwards way of thinking — that I needed to put all my love out to others and always put others before myself. But then I thought, “If I give all my love out to everyone else, what love do I have left to give myself?”

Over the years, I’ve learned that if you can’t love yourself FIRST, it’s going to be hard to be in happy relationships, whether it be with your partner or friends. The second you learn to love yourself, everything else will fall into place.

I actually started practicing this theory in my life over a year ago, and I can’t tell you what a difference it’s made in my life. Every single relationship in my life has changed as a result of this, and I’ve found that those who don’t want to value the love you’ve found for yourself won’t be able to handle being in your life. And you know what? That’s totally okay!

So, this Valentine’s Day, what do you say we make it less about who loves you and more about how much you love yourself?!

This actually reminds me of an old saying: that you truly can’t love another until you love yourself. This seriously rings SO true with me. I now find myself to be a better wife, mother, friend, boss, and relative with this newfound love for myself.

Whether you’re single or in a relationship, remember to give yourself some love today. Actually, do that every day! Today, I’m excited to spend time with my husband, my beautiful daughter Collette, and my English bulldog, Duke.
