How to Mix Highs and Lows

| Fashion

When it comes to your personal style, you don’t have to break the bank to look like a million bucks. The key is mastering the art of mixing highs and lows, i.e., wearing a few high-end pieces mixed into an otherwise affordable ensemble.

I won’t lie: I love me some designer clothes. But over the years, I’ve gotten really skilled at finding designer clothes for affordable prices. Especially online, it’s actually so easy to buy designer goods at a fraction of the cost, whether it’s shopping on Tradesy, Outlet.com, SaksOff5th.com or any other online outlet shop.

I’ve also been sniffing around Poshmark recently looking for staple designer pieces that every girl should have in her closet. You’ll be surprised by the amazing stuff you can find for cheap.

The best way to mix highs and lows is to invest in good shoes, purses and jewelry and mix these standout items with Zara, H&M and Topshop. Yes, I am a mother of two and sometimes shop at Forever 21 as well. If I want a white T-shirt, I’m not going to spend $100 on it; I’m going to buy it for $10 at Forever 21. So what if I’m in my 30s? A T-shirt is a T-shirt.

The only problem with shopping at a store that has a lot of high-fashion designer pieces is that sometimes the clothes look like knockoffs. I’m always careful about what to choose that doesn’t look like an exact copy. It’s one thing to get a fun, on-trend Zara top, but something else entirely if it looks like an Yves Saint Laurent knockoff.

When I like a designer item, I go to ShopStyle and set up a sale alert. I love this shopping website because it sends you alerts when your favorite things go on sale. Believe it or not, most of the stuff I like get slashed in prices when I wait for them. The only downside is the wait sometimes lasts for months, so it requires patience.

So how do I mix highs and lows? I love wearing statement items with my Zara T-shirt and jeans. For example, when I was in Italy, I went to the Dolce & Gabbana outlet and spent just $70 on some amazing earrings that normally cost $600. I still wear these earrings all the time. I love mixing them in during the afternoon and at night when I have my glam on.

Another example: Is mixing this fun look that I got from Zara with a designer Chanel backpack. My boots are from Revolve and I dressed up the look with fun accessories.
